There was a time when you could just set up a WordPress site at any web host and that was good enough. You could just start posting stuff and that was it. The Internet was fairly new, the users were enthusiastic, interested and they had time and patience. From time to time, some kids playing with scripts would DDoS your site at most, but it was a rare occurrence. Life was simple.

The users have little patience. If a website does not load in at most 2 seconds, they just leave. The attention economy depleted their attention so they can’t tolerate losing time on a slow-loading site. To avoid losing users, your site must load up as fast as it can. Speed is also important for search traffic – now search engines treat site speed as a factor in ranking websites. So you’d better have your site as fast as possible if you want to be found when what you have on your site is searched.

There is even an entire industry that revolves around hacking websites. You can use a security plugin – but you don’t know whether it will unintentionally break some of your own website’s features or block legitimate users.
What happens when your site becomes more successful and gets more traffic or customers and your web host’s overcrowded server can’t hold it up anymore? Upgrade to a new package – either the host will force you to or you will have to do it because your site is getting bogged down anyway. Again starts the hassle of moving everything to a new package or even a new web host with all the intricate issues around downtime, setting up, compatibility problems and all that. And when your site grows even more, rinse and repeat.
With all of these, running a WordPress site is much more complex than how it was before. Just setting up everything needed won’t be enough either – you will have to manage them. Keep an eye on the changes in the CDN provider, web host performance, settings and the updates of all the different services like edge caches, security, anti-spam, performance plugins and custom configurations. It’s literally a management hell. If you like managing such stuff that’s great – but even in that case it definitely takes time away from making your site successful with its content, products and users.
